Big Sur Marathon

The Big Sur International Marathon is one of the world’s most celebrated destination road races, taking runners on a spectacular point-to-point journey along California’s Highway 1 from Big Sur to Carmel on the rugged Pacific coast of the United States. Held on the last Sunday of April, the marathon is renowned not for being an easy or exceptionally fast course, but for combining the challenge of 26.2 miles with extraordinary coastal scenery, substantial climbing and one of the most distinctive race-day experiences in distance running.

First held in 1986, the Big Sur International Marathon has grown into an internationally recognized event attracting runners from across the United States and around the world. The race is organized by the nonprofit Big Sur Marathon Foundation, which uses its running events to support health, fitness and community programs throughout California’s Monterey County.
