Chester Marathon is one of the United Kingdom’s most celebrated marathon events and has earned a reputation as one of the country’s best-organized and most scenic road races. Held annually in the historic city of Chester in northwest England, the marathon combines Roman history, medieval architecture, Welsh countryside scenery, and a famously supportive race atmosphere. Organized by Active Leisure Events, the event has grown into the fifth-largest marathon in the UK and is widely recognized as one of Britain’s premier autumn marathon experiences.
The marathon begins and finishes near Chester Racecourse and is notable for being the only marathon in the UK that crosses both England and Wales. Runners pass many of Chester’s iconic landmarks, including the Roman Walls, Eastgate Clock, Chester Cathedral, and riverside sections along the River Dee before heading into the surrounding Cheshire and North Wales countryside. The course is known for being relatively fast and predominantly flat, making it a popular destination for personal best attempts and Boston Marathon qualification. Organizers note that more than 70% of runners achieve PBs on the course.
The event weekend also includes the MBNA Chester Metric Marathon, mini-marathon events, pace teams, training runs, seminars, and charity fundraising partnerships. The marathon has won multiple national awards, including recognition as the UK’s Best Marathon in public runner voting, and maintains a strong reputation for volunteer support and race-day organization.
