The Great UP Run is one of the Philippines’ most iconic university-based road races, held annually within the picturesque campus of the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City, Philippines. Combining a fast, tree-lined course with a meaningful cause, the event welcomes everyone from first-time runners to experienced racers. Participants run beneath the famous acacia-lined roads of the UP campus while supporting the university’s varsity athletic programs, making the race as much a community celebration as it is a competitive sporting event. The event has become known by its slogan ”#FinisherUnderTheTrees,” reflecting its unique campus atmosphere and shaded finish.
Originally launched in 2007 by Coach Rio de la Cruz, the Great UP Run marked the beginning of what would later become RUNRIO, Inc., one of the Philippines’ premier race organizers. Over nearly two decades, the event has grown into a longstanding tradition that brings together UP students, alumni, faculty, varsity athletes, and runners from across the country. Following a pandemic hiatus, the race returned and continues its mission of promoting health, school pride, and support for the University’s athletic programs. Today, the event offers multiple distances—including 5K, 10K, and 16K (10 miles)—making it accessible to runners of all experience levels while maintaining its fundraising focus for UP athletics.
