The Maizuru Red Brick Half Marathon is one of Japan’s most distinctive half marathons, combining coastal scenery, military history, and the unique atmosphere of a working naval port. Held in the city of Maizuru, the race takes runners through areas that are normally inaccessible to the public, including sections of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force facilities, waterfront roads overlooking Maizuru Bay, and the city’s famous red brick warehouse district that gives the event its name. The course is officially certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) and is known for its flat-to-rolling profile, making it attractive to both first-time half marathoners and runners chasing personal bests.
The race begins and finishes near the historic Red Brick Park, a collection of Meiji-era naval warehouses that have become one of northern Kyoto’s most recognizable landmarks. Along the route, runners enjoy views of warships docked at naval piers, helicopter facilities at the Maritime Self-Defense Force air base, industrial shipbuilding facilities, and the sheltered waters of Maizuru Bay. The combination of maritime scenery and military heritage creates a race experience unlike almost any other road race in Japan.
The event has grown into one of the premier running events in the Kansai region and has been selected among Japan’s highly regarded running events through runner evaluations. It is also a partner event of the Tokyo Marathon’s RUN as ONE program and a member of the Half Marathon Challenge Cup series.
