The Maratón Internacional de Punta del Este is one of Uruguay’s premier road running events and has become a favorite destination marathon in South America thanks to its spectacular coastal scenery, well-organized race weekend, and welcoming atmosphere. Co-organized by Suca Sports and Filípides SRL, the event attracts thousands of runners from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and around the world each September to one of South America’s most famous beach resorts. Offering distances of 42.195 km, 21.1 km, 10K, 5K, and children’s races, the event caters to everyone from elite marathoners to first-time runners and families. The marathon is professionally organized with electronic chip timing, multiple aid stations, medical support, and an attractive race expo, making it one of the region’s flagship running festivals.
The race is held in the resort city of Punta del Este, Uruguay, a destination renowned for its beautiful Atlantic coastline, luxury resorts, white-sand beaches, and iconic landmarks such as the famous La Mano (“The Hand”) sculpture emerging from the sand. The course showcases many of the city’s highlights, taking runners through the harbor district, downtown streets, Playa Mansa, Playa Brava, the waterfront ramblas, and neighborhoods lined with elegant homes and ocean views. Although the route is largely flat and fast, the coastal winds coming off the Atlantic Ocean and Río de la Plata can add an extra challenge, making pacing an important part of race strategy. September offers cool spring temperatures that are generally favorable for marathon running, typically ranging from about 8°C to 18°C.
