Nagai Marathon
The Nagai Marathon (ι·δΊγγ©γ½γ³) is one of Yamagata Prefecture's premier autumn road races, offering runners a fast, certified course through the picturesque countryside of Nagai City in northern Japan. First established in 1987, the event has developed a reputation for combining competitive racing with the warm hospitality of a close-knit rural community. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, and expansive rice fields, the marathon showcases the natural beauty of southern Yamagata during the peak of the autumn season, when cool temperatures and vibrant fall colours create ideal conditions for distance running. Its combination of a flat course, excellent organization, and welcoming local atmosphere has made it a popular destination for runners seeking both personal bests and an authentic regional race experience.
The event features a World Athletics- and JAAF-certified full marathon, a half marathon, a 2 km Enjoy Run, and a 2 km Family Run, providing opportunities for everyone from elite competitors to recreational runners and local families. The marathon and half marathon begin on the road adjacent to Koyo Seiki Athlete Field Nagai before following an out-and-back route through the flat agricultural landscape surrounding Nagai City. The largely level profile and cool October weather make the course particularly attractive for runners chasing Boston Marathon qualifying standards or seasonal personal bests. Along the route, participants are supported by enthusiastic volunteers and local residents, while the finish inside Koyo Seiki Athlete Field provides an energetic conclusion to the race. Every marathon and half marathon finisher who completes the course within the time limit receives a commemorative finisher's towel in addition to the official event T-shirt, further reflecting the event's attention to participant experience.
