The Naha Marathon is one of Japan’s most iconic destination marathons and one of the largest sporting events in Naha. Held annually on the tropical island of Okinawa Island, the race is known as the “Festival of Sun, Ocean and Joggers” and combines a challenging full marathon with Okinawa’s distinctive culture, warm hospitality, and enthusiastic roadside support. Established in 1985 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Naha and Honolulu, the event has grown into one of Japan’s premier road races, regularly attracting tens of thousands of participants from across Japan and around the world.
Unlike the cooler autumn marathons found on Japan’s main islands, the Naha Marathon offers runners a subtropical racing experience. December temperatures are generally mild to warm, making hydration and pacing important considerations. The certified 42.195 km course begins at Onoyama Park before heading south through the municipalities of Naha, Haebaru, Yaese, Itoman, and Tomigusuku. The course reaches its turnaround near Peace Memorial Park before returning to Naha, where runners finish inside the athletics stadium. Along the route, participants are welcomed by enthusiastic local residents offering music, dancing, traditional Okinawan performances, and unofficial aid stations stocked with regional snacks and refreshments. This festive atmosphere has become one of the marathon’s defining characteristics and is frequently cited as one of the best spectator experiences in Japan.
