Sagae Sakuranbo Marathon

Held in the cherry-growing heartland of Yamagata Prefecture, the Sagae Sakuranbo Marathon is one of northern Japanโ€™s most charming early-summer road races. Taking place in the city of Sagae, the event celebrates the regionโ€™s famous sakuranbo (cherries) and combines competitive running with the warm hospitality for which rural Japan is known. Runners pass through scenic countryside, orchards, and residential neighborhoods while enjoying views of the surrounding mountains and agricultural landscape that have made the area one of Japanโ€™s premier fruit-producing regions.

The race attracts participants ranging from serious club runners chasing personal bests to families and recreational runners looking to experience a uniquely Japanese local marathon. The event is especially popular because it coincides with cherry season, giving visitors an opportunity to combine racing with sightseeing, local food, and fruit-picking experiences throughout the region. Over its long history, the race has become a signature sporting event for Sagae and a showcase for the cityโ€™s community spirit and agricultural heritage. Recent editions have drawn several thousand participants, making it one of the larger regional road races in the Tohoku region.
