Sakai City Kojo Marathon

The Sakai City Kojō Marathon is a popular annual running event held in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Taking place in November, the race invites runners of all ages and abilities to experience the historic surroundings of Maruoka, a traditional Japanese castle town renowned for its centuries-old architecture, cultural heritage, and welcoming community atmosphere.

Organized by the Sakai City Kojō Marathon Executive Committee, with support from the Sakai City Sports Association, the event combines competitive distance running with an appreciation for the region’s history and traditions. Its name, Kojō, meaning “old castle,” reflects the area’s close association with Maruoka Castle, one of Japan’s most historically significant surviving castles.

Located in the northern part of Fukui Prefecture, Sakai City is known for its scenic landscapes, traditional communities, and important cultural landmarks. The municipality includes the historic town of Maruoka, where the marathon takes place, as well as coastal areas along the Sea of Japan.
