The Shinagawa City Run is one of Tokyo’s newest large-scale urban road races, showcasing the waterfront districts and vibrant neighborhoods of Shinagawa City. First launched in 2025, the event was created to give runners the rare opportunity to race on streets that are normally busy with traffic while highlighting the area’s blend of modern cityscapes, parks, canals, and historic communities. Organized as a community-focused event rather than an elite-only competition, the race welcomes runners of all abilities and places a strong emphasis on local participation, family-friendly events, and regional pride.
The headline event is the 10 km race, beginning in Shinagawa Kumin Park (Shinagawa Citizens’ Park) and finishing at Oi Racecourse (Oi Keibajo) after following a specially designed point-to-point course through eastern Shinagawa. In addition to the 10 km event, the race festival includes a 2 km Junior Run, a Wheelchair Challenge, and a 1 km Family Run, making it a true community celebration that attracts runners, spectators, volunteers, and local organizations alike.
Unlike many long-established Japanese road races that focus primarily on tourism, the Shinagawa City Run was designed to strengthen local community engagement while also introducing visitors to an often-overlooked side of Tokyo. Participants pass canals, green spaces, industrial heritage areas, and redeveloped waterfront districts that illustrate Shinagawa’s unique character as both one of Tokyo’s oldest wards and one of its fastest-growing business hubs.
