The Taupo Marathon

The Taupō Marathon is one of New Zealand’s most established and scenic running events, welcoming thousands of participants to the beautiful lakeside town of Taupō on the country’s North Island. Held annually in August, the event combines the excitement of distance running with breathtaking views of Lake Taupō, distant snow-covered mountains, and the remarkable natural landscapes of New Zealand’s central volcanic plateau.

Organized by Total Sport, the Taupō Marathon has become a celebrated fixture on New Zealand’s winter running calendar. With a history spanning more than three decades, the event attracts competitive athletes, recreational runners, walkers, and families seeking an unforgettable experience in one of the country’s most picturesque destinations.

Situated in the Waikato region, Taupō is internationally recognized for its extraordinary natural surroundings. The town lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Taupō, New Zealand’s largest lake by surface area, which occupies the caldera of an ancient volcanic system. The surrounding landscape features dramatic mountains, geothermal attractions, native forests, and expansive waterfront pathways.
