The Watarase Floodplain Autumn Marathon is a scenic running event held in the expansive Watarase Floodplain (Watarase Yusuichi) near Tochigi City, Japan. Taking place in late autumn, the event offers runners a unique opportunity to experience one of Japanβs most remarkable natural landscapes while participating in a variety of race distances, including a full marathon, half marathon, half marathon relay, 10.8K, 5.4K, and family run.
Organized by the Sports Mate Run Executive Committee, the event welcomes runners of all abilities, from first-time participants and recreational joggers to experienced distance runners pursuing personal bests. With its predominantly flat terrain, spacious surroundings, and welcoming atmosphere, the Watarase Floodplain Autumn Marathon provides an accessible and enjoyable racing experience away from the congestion of major urban marathons.
The race takes place within the Watarase Floodplain, an extensive flood-control and wetland area spanning four Japanese prefectures: Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, and Ibaraki. The region is particularly well known for its vast open spaces, diverse natural habitats, and Yanaka Lake, which forms a striking backdrop for the event. Participants enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding landscape, creating a peaceful and visually memorable running experience.
