The Zagreb Marathon (Zagrebački Maraton) is Croatia’s largest and most prestigious road running event, bringing thousands of runners to the nation’s capital every autumn for a celebration of endurance, community, and Croatian culture. First held in 1992, shortly after Croatia gained independence, the marathon has grown into one of Southeast Europe’s leading road races and has become an important fixture on the international marathon calendar. The race begins and finishes in the heart of the city at the iconic Ban Josip Jelačić Square, Zagreb’s historic central plaza. From there, runners embark on a largely flat urban course that showcases many of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, elegant Austro-Hungarian architecture, broad boulevards, historic neighbourhoods, leafy parks, and vibrant public squares. The relatively gentle elevation profile makes the course well suited for both first-time marathoners and experienced runners aiming to achieve personal best performances.
