Bismarck Marathon

The Bismarck Marathon is North Dakota’s longest-running marathon and one of the Midwest’s most underrated fall running events. Held annually in the state capital of Bismarck, the race combines a fast, mostly flat course with scenic views of the Missouri River, historic neighborhoods, and the iconic North Dakota State Capitol Grounds. Established in 1981, the event has grown into a major community celebration featuring a full marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 10K, 5K, youth races, and family-friendly festivities. The marathon is USATF-certified and serves as a Boston Marathon qualifier, attracting both competitive runners chasing personal bests and first-time marathoners looking for a supportive race-day atmosphere.

The course starts and finishes at the North Dakota State Capitol Grounds and follows an out-and-back route that parallels the Missouri River.
