Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon

The Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon is one of Japan’s most distinctive and beloved winter marathons, offering runners the opportunity to begin the racing year surrounded by vibrant yellow rapeseed blossoms (nanohana), dramatic coastal scenery, and the legendary hospitality of southern Kyushu. Held annually in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, the event has grown into one of the country’s classic destination marathons, attracting thousands of runners from across Japan and overseas.

Unlike many city marathons that focus on speed and personal bests, the Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon emphasizes atmosphere, scenery, and community. The course winds through blooming rapeseed fields, along Kagoshima’s rugged coastline, past the massive waters of Lake Ikeda, and beneath the iconic silhouette of Mount Kaimon, often referred to as the “Satsuma Fuji” because of its near-perfect volcanic cone. Participants also experience several of Ibusuki’s famous sightseeing areas, including regions known for the city’s renowned natural sand baths and hot spring culture.
